Dr. Tze-yue Gigi Hu is the founder of Calm Happy Taiji. She started learning Taiji when she was a Ph.D student of Comparative Literature at the University of Hong Kong in 1997. Her first taste of Taiji movements was with a group of senior residents in a public community center located at a section of the hilly meandering Pokfulam Road in the main Hong Kong island.

Dr. Hu finally acquired her professional training in Taiji graduating with a Master of Science in Tai Chi (MSTC) degree in 2016 from the College of Taichi at the University of East-West Medicine, Sunnyvale in Northern California. The college dean is Professor Chi-hsiu Daniel Weng who is also the prominent initiator of the US Collegiate Taiji Federation. Through the 15 years prior to meeting Professor Weng, Dr. Hu had attended Taiji classes taught by different teachers. Under the theoretical and practical guidance of Professor Weng, she is able to experience and comprehend on a deeper level, the universal perspectives of Taiji and its broad applications in everyday life. Dr. Hu is appreciative of all the variety of Taiji and Qigong classes she had taken in the past as they have paved the path for the Calm Happy Taiji that she currently creates, practices and shares with her students and outreach communities.

Dr. Hu is also an independent educator and scholar, and has published books on Asian and Visual Studies subjects (see https://tyghu.webs.com/). Occasionally, she incorporates related art and culture topics into her selected Taiji-Qigong teaching. To help her students remember and understand the Taiji-Qigong movements better, she uses storytelling’s elements as well to enhance her teaching and engage the participant’s overall learning experience and well-being.
